“I just went to see a naturopath,” I said casually as we were looking over the menus.
“What could she teach you that you don’t already know?” he asked.
[bctt tweet=”Do you sometimes feel like you are wandering around in circles health-wise?” username=””] Or running on a hamster wheel – ton of effort, but getting nowhere fast? Spending lots of money with very little return on your investment?
This is exactly how I was beginning to feel in some areas of my health, and what I did (and keep on doing) might surprise you.
But let me tell you a story first.
I have this 20-year old relic of a lawnmower that I refuse to replace for as long as the motor is running. A few years back it stopped cutting the grass and started chewing on it instead – clearly not a very good sign.
My friend Sue, who I believed was very knowledgeable in such things, suggested changing the blade. “ It couldn’t be easier,” she said, “there’s only one bolt, you take the old blade off, put the new one on, and viola, good to go – all for under 10$.”
Well, I’d be damned! I replaced that blade and felt ridiculously proud of myself for being so very industrious. Until a few minutes later I realized that the mower now wouldn’t start.
Long story short, and 300$ in repairs later (yup, could’ve bought a new mower!), I had that old beast purring again. “Oh, we would’ve changed your blade for under 30$” the shop people said.
Hmmmmm….
Should’ve gone to the shop in the first place…
I spent the last 12 years of my life relentlessly studying posture, alignment and movement. I am incredibly passionate (ok, some people might say annoying) and dedicated to what I do. When I work with clients I know exactly how to choose precise, targeted, multi-tasking movement strategies that deliver most results.
It took me a long time to understand that working with health practitioners, who are just as passionate and knowledgeable about their area of expertise as I am about movement, doesn’t just deliver best possible results in the most efficient manner – it actually saves time and money. It also took me a bit of time to get humble enough (or maybe wise enough) to say to myself that I simply cannot be an expert in every single area of my health.
Does our popular culture have you convinced that getting better health is as simple as putting this new funky patch on your arm, popping a few random supplements, doing some lunges (where is your front knee tracking, by the way?), or listening to a meditation app? [bctt tweet=”How well is this “health routine” working for you?” username=””] Do you feel that you are getting what you’ve paid for?
And the naturopath?
I sat down in her office and said,
“I want supplements that work as hard as my body does.
I don’t care to take a handful of pills every day.
And I want the biggest bang for my healthcare buck.”
Don’t you?
